Demo Garden Work Party Led by the Edmonds Stewards

  • Edmonds Wildlife Habitat and Native Plant Demonstration Garden (map)

Spring is springing fast! and the Edmonds Native Plant Demonstration Garden is calling. We will have a work party on Saturday, April 6, from 10:30-12:30. Come for a half hour or for the full time--any time you can give will help! We have tools on-site, but if you have a favorite pair of garden gloves or pruning shears, bring 'em along. You don't need to sign up in advance, just come on over--we'll have a sign-in sheet for you when you arrive.

We'll do a little clean up on both sides of the driveway, add some mulch and a few new plants to the upper garden, and--something new!--design and plant The Stumpery!

What's a "stumpery," you ask? Come find out! Gary planted one a couple of weeks ago (see photo below), which is thriving. Now we're putting one in as a memorial to the Great Maple Tree that had to be felled in January. We'll recycle the old logs into new habitat for ferns, mosses, huckleberries, and other lowland, wood-loving perennials. With your help, the remains of the grand old maple will give birth to a whole new community!

No advanced registration is required.

Green Grubbing Party!

Looking for a fun way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Join Sound Salmon Solutions for a day of riparian restoration contributing to the restoration of the Skykomish River! We are seeking volunteers to assist in grubbing (removing) English Ivy and other invasive vegetation. Invasive species are those that are introduced by humans and outgrow and out-compete native species. They often lack the deep root structures that prevent erosion and can shade out or even fall our native trees. Removing invasive vegetation is vital to habitat restoration to ensure the newly planted native trees and shrubs will have an opportunity to flourish thus restoring salmon spawning habitat.  This is a family-friendly volunteer event. Exact address will be shared with registered participants.

Cleaning Pond and Ponding the Coho

  • Willow Creek Salmon and Watershed Education Center (map)

Time to move the coho to the pond! But first the pond needs to be cleaned and prepped for the 80,000 new coho fry.

Please join us in cleaning the pond and then ponding the coho. This event goes all day, but there is a significant break between cleaning the pond and moving the coho.

Cleaning the pond can be slippery,  so please wear waders if you have them or non-slip shoes. We will provide the supplies to clean the pond but do not have extra boots, waders or other PPE. Cleaning the pond will likely go from 9 am - 11 am (ish), then there will be a lunch break until 3 pm when the fish can be ponded (the pond takes about 3 hours to fill to a level where the fish can be moved).

If you have any questions, please email kaelie@soundsalmonsolutions.org

Please note that this event is capped at 20 volunteers but if it fills up, please email Kaelie if you’d like to join.

Polar Plunge: Show your love for salmon!

Show your Love for Salmon by joining SSS for our annual Polar Plunge!

Sound Salmon Solutions is hosting our Polar Plunge on February 10th, 2024. The Polar Plunge is our annual fundraising event where registered participants show their love for salmon by seeking pledge donations before making the icy plunge into the Puget Sound. As we enter our 34th year of operation, we plan to use contributions from events such as the Polar Plunge to further expand our programs and our impact on salmon recovery by continuing our mission of connecting our community to their watershed for the future of salmon.

Not only is this event helpful for Sound Salmon Solutions, but it has also been a community favorite as it is an opportunity to connect with fellow watershed warriors, dress up, and have fun! Following the plunge, participants are invited to join us at our office located on 3rd Street for warm beverages and Ivars Clam Chowder, and see the coho salmon we are raising here! If you're ready to show your love for salmon by embracing the cold, register at the link below!

A minimum donation of $20 for youth and $40 for adult participants is requested. Costumes are highly encouraged, but not required. *Please note due to safety concerns, only registered participants will be able to plunge, but guests are welcome to cheer from shore.

After registering you will receive an email from Brittany with further information on how to collect pledges.

Interested in supporting this event without taking the plunge? Consider sponsoring a Plunger or making a donation!

CANCELED: Restoring the Chinook Bend Natural Area for Salmon

Join Sound Salmon Solutions in assisting with the restoration of the Chinook Bend Natural Area. Pacific salmon are vital to our ecosystem, economy, and culture in Washington. They provide nutrients to us and countless other species including the magnificent trees that build our temperate rainforests. This event will focus on planting fascines as part of a study in partnership with King County to study how to shade out reed canary grass while also living with beavers. Fascines are tight bundles of thin live stakes planted lengthwise into the ground. They are typically used to reduce erosion caused by wave action or surface runoff. The hope is that the density at which the fascines grow will outcompete the rate at which beavers can eat them. Volunteers ages 10+ with parent/guardian are encouraged join us.
